Newborn photoshoots are an exciting experience that most new parents look forward to -but this shouldn’t come at the cost of your baby’s safety. You probably would have heard stories from family and friends about things to be aware of when doing an infant photoshoot. However, too much information can confuse you more than give you clarity.

In this article, I will share insights from my experience on what you should be mindful of when opting for a newborn photography session.

Check With Your Health Practitioner

If your baby has any health conditions or special requirements that would affect their comfort or safety in certain positions, then consult with your baby doctor if a photoshoot is suitable at this stage. The photographer can only work with the information you provide them, so it’s always best to get your doctor’s advice before making an informed decision.

Never Place Baby In Anything Breakable Or Unsupported

You cannot place babies in anything and everything, especially if they are breakable or unsupported, like glass or ceramic. If you have any inspirations you want to recreate, specify them. We, as professional photographers, have the knowledge and expertise to do this with proper safety practices.

If you are giving the props to be used in the photoshoot, make sure they are free from hazards and details that can scratch or hurt the baby. Always have a thick layer of fabric on the surface of a prop when placing your baby in something. This applies especially to baskets and buckets.

Never place the baby in unsupported places like hammocks suspended from a branch or anywhere high up unattended.

Respond To Cues And Take Breaks

Crying is the only way a newborn knows how to communicate. Most babies experience things like birth trauma and develop feelings that we won’t be able to understand until they cry. So feel free to take breaks if you feel your baby is getting uncomfortable or cranky.

Try some very gentle patting or rocking, or check if anything in the props or dress irritates them. If they don’t stop crying, take a break to feed and soothe them. This also plays a role in why newborn or infant photography sessions are longer and take more time than regular photoshoots.

Ensure The Shoot Location Is Comfortable

The location or place you choose for the photoshoot is very important to keep your baby comfortable throughout the session. Make sure your baby has enough warmth to keep them comfortable and calm. Check the baby’s skin throughout to make sure they feel warm or for mottled hands and feet to make sure they’re not too cool.

Also, remember, while you can regulate the indoor temperatures, it is not the same outdoors. So, you may have to pay extra attention to the climate, temperatures, and weather conditions when deciding to do an outdoor photoshoot.

Hire A Professional

Lastly, hiring a professional photographer is the only reliable way to keep your baby safe during a newborn photoshoot. No DIYs or YouTube tutorials can match the expertise and first-hand knowledge of a professional photographer.

We know all the methods that work to create the perfect pictures and take accountability for safety measures. This goes a long way, as we do everything to keep your baby safe and comfortable throughout the session.
